COMMON APPLICATION Approximately 200 colleges from all over the United States have worked together to develop and distribute the Common Application. Some of the colleges use the Common Application exclusively. Colleges give equal consideration to their own application and the Common Application. Extensive use of this form over a period of years has demonstrated its value to both students and counselors. In 2001-2002, for the first time since its inception 25 years ago, some public colleges and universities will be included. Thesix public institutions are the University of Delaware, University of Maine at Orono, Mary Washington College (Virginia), University of Southern Maine, University of Vermont, and College of William & Mary (Virginia). The Common Application can be filled out once by the student and the counselor, photocopied, then sent to any number of schools. The high school makes no specific recommendation as to the use of the Common Application, leaving the decision to the discretion of the applicant. The Common Application may be downloaded from the internet |
OTHER APPLICATIONS Applications for individual colleges may be obtained by visiting the college admissions office or by writing the college using either regular mail or email (See College Websites, Email Addresses, Telephone Numbers, etc.). Many colleges will allow students to download applications via the internet and will encourage students to apply online. Some colleges waive the application fee for those who apply using the online application process. Check with the College/Career Center as to any disks on hand that may be used with some colleges at no cost to the student. No matter the process, the important strategy is to have applications comleted in a timely manner.
