Regular Action-
The time-honored process in which students file applications by a January, February, or even a
March deadline. This is the traditional approach, which is the way most students apply. Students
hold their collective breaths until spring when the acceptances arrive. Students and colleges seem
to be moving away from this process, however, in the schools offering early admission programs
about 60-65% are still accepted through regular action. Students must notify colleges of their
decision by May 1. Rolling Admissions Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. The college does not hold up its decisions until the bulk of the applications are received, but accepts its candidates within a reasonable amount of time after the application has been received. With both regular and rolling admissions, colleges do not require students to make a final decision prior to May 1 for fall matriculation. |
Early Action- Early action, which is often confused with "EARLY DECISION", is non-binding.
It simply means that the student is allowed to apply early and receive an early response.
Usually responses are made well in advance of the regular spring admissions notification.
This is a good way for students to apply without making a firm commitment.
Early Decision- Students applying for early decision must decide by the beginning of November their first choice
for college admissions and stick with it. Early decision is considered binding with the student
signing a letter of commitment to that college. Applications are generally due
sometime between November 1-15 with acceptances arriving about December 15. Students may apply
to other colleges, but must withdraw these applications once accepted at an early decision school.
The colleges take this seriously and have a fairly strong network of notification, often communicating
decisions within the network. Students rejected for an early decision are often put on "deferred status"
and re-considered for regular admissions. Students must be absolutely sure of their choice before
submitting an early decision application.
