How To ...

See Your Counselor
Students may see their counselors by submitting a "Request To See Counselor" form available in the counseling office. Many times, if counselors are available, they will see students as they "drop in" at lunch, after school, or with a pass from a teacher. Most importantly students must secure permission in advance from their teacher to see their counselor without a scheduled appointment. During "free" time students may come in whenever they choose, but must remember that counselors carry a heavy load and may not be available. In emergency situations students should speak to the receptionist when the counselor is unavailable. The receptionist will assist the student in making the proper contacts. Parents usually find it most convenient to call ahead for an appointment.
Drop/Add a Class - Complete the appropriate forms, then make an appointment with your counselor.

Adding. Accommodation depends upon
  • how long the class has been in progress
  • whether there is space in the class
  • if it will fit in the student's schedule
  • teacher approval, if required

Students make an appointment with their counselor to determine the feasibility of the addition.

Dropping.

Students are permitted to withdraw from a course under the following conditions.
  • Within five school days after the distribution of the quarter grade report with no penalty. (class does not appear on the transcript)
  • After the end of the eleventh week with a "W" to appear on the transcript, if the student is passing.
  • Students withdrawing 3 weeks prior to the end of the semester drop with a "F" on the transcript regardless of their grade in the class.
Audit a Class
Students may elect to take classes classes for AUDIT with the teacher's permission. The deadline for taking advantage of this option is one week after the distribution of the quarter grade report. It is the student's responsibility to obtain the proper form in the Counseling Center and secure the proper signatures. Students must submit the completed form prior to the deadline. Once granted the option is irrevocable. Students who are struggling in a class often opt to audit rather than drop the class or receive a "D" or "F" grade. By auditing a class, the student has the opportunity to continuing learning without penalty of grade. The student is better prepared when repeating the class for a grade. The teacher's and counselor's recommendations are key to the success of an audit.

Take a Class Pass/Fail
Students may elect to take fine and practical arts classes as Pass/Fail, rather than for grade. The deadline for taking advantage of this option is one week after the distribution of the quarter grade report. It is the student's responsibility to obtain the proper form in the Counseling Center and secure the proper signatures. Students must submit the completed form prior to the deadline. Once granted the option is irrevocable. Students need to be reminded that colleges do not accept "Pass/Fail" as meeting a requirement for fine arts.

Change a Class
  • During the last week of August, students needing a schedule change because of error may come in during the time designated in the registration packet to see their counselors.
  • When a schedule adjustment is necessary at the beginning of the school year, students must complete the "Change of Course Request Form" available in the counseling office. This form is submitted to the Counseling Center for review by the counselor. All students requesting a change must remain in class until notified that the change has been made officially. This occurs after the counselor meets with the student. Generally, appointments are made only for changes that can be accommodated.
  • After approximately one week of school, students needing a change may schedule an appointment with their counselors. The "Change of Course Request Form" is still necessary.
Correct a Report Card Error
The "Grade Change Form" is available for teachers in the Counseling Center. Only the teacher of the class which needs the grade correction may begin the process to effect the change. If a student discovers an error on a grade report(report card) he/she must first talk to the teacher. If there is no resolution, the parents should request an appointment with the teacher to review grades. Only the teacher may change a grade. The teacher turns in the form to the registrar. After a reasonable length of time, the student may check in the counseling office to see that the change has been recorded on the transcript.
