LUNCH

 

How much money do I need to bring to school every day?

None, unless you buy lunch or need to make Xerox copies

How much money do I need to bring to buy lunch?

Bring about five dollars. Lunch will usually cost less, but it is good to have some extra money just in case.

Can I go off campus for lunch?

No, the only students who can leave campus for lunch are the seniors with their I.D. cards or students who have parents write permission slips for them.

What kind of food is available on campus?

There is a greater variety of food at PVPHS than at the intermediate schools including Italian, Chinese, and Japanese cuisine. Food stations are located all around the campus.

Where do you eat lunch?

You can eat anywhere within the campus, but only seniors are allowed to go off campus.

Can I leave at lunch?

No. Sophomores and Freshmen are never allowed to leave at Lunch, Period 5, or Period 6 unless they have work experience, SCROC, or an off campus pass.

 

Attendance

 

What happens if I'm absent?

Any students absent from any class must have their parents call ahead or clear the absence after.

What happens if I cut class?

After cuts on three distinct occasions, a student will be subject to removal from class. Students are subject to receiving a "U" in citizenship. For details, click here.

Academic

 

What is the California Scholarship Federation (CSF)?

CSF Is an academic honors organization that gives $1000 scholarships to several seniors each year. Students also can be a CSF sealbearer at graduation.

Why is CSF important?

Honors and recognition in high school by programs like C.S.F. can help you get scholarships and can be listed on college applications.

What are the rules for getting into the CSF?

 

One must have at least 10 points of credit. Check with Mrs. Scholton for a list of the classes that count each semester.

Is tutoring available?

Zero period math tutoring is available and later in the year National Honor Society offers tutoring during lunch in the Library Media Center.

What is an AP class/test?

AP class is an Advance Placement class where you learn and prepare all year for the AP test. AP test is a national test where you will receive a score of 1 - 5 depending on how you do. Some colleges give college credit for scores of 4 or 5 on the AP test.

What is SAT and ACT and how do I prepare?

SAT and ACT are college entrance exams which cover a variety of information. More information and study guides are located in the College Career Center.

Sports

 

Do I have to take a shower in P.E?

No, you don't have to take a shower in P.E.

What do I need to do to get into a sport?

Talk to the coaches. Some sports have tryouts. Check our sports website for information on individual sports.To get involved in a sport, you must go through tryouts except for track, cross country, and football. The tryout dates will be posted in the daily bulletin. If you are accepted then the coach will give you a slip to give to your counselor to put it in your schedule. If you do not make it, you can tryout for another sport, or take P.E. To go to any tryout, you need a written physical from a doctor. If you don't make it, you can tryout again next year. Forms are available in the Hawthorne Office.

What kinds of sports are offered?

A wide variety of sports, from track to crew to wrestling and football are offered at PVPHS. For the complete list, visit the athletics page click here.

How much P.E. do you have to take? Do you take P.E. if you are in a sport?

You must be enrolled in two years of P.E. The state of California requires that all ninth and tenth grade students must take some form of physical education. If you take a school sport, you do not need to take P.E.

Can I participate in two sports at the same time?

You cannot participate in two sports that are in the same season, but you can participate in two sports that compete during two different seasons. Click here for more info.

 

Clubs

 

What are the rules for getting into the National Honor Society?

 NHS is for juniors and seniors, who apply based on grades, leadership, and community service. Start working hard now so you'll be eligible!

How do I get involved in clubs?

There is a club sign up week where students can go to all the clubs and sign up for the ones they choose.

What kind of clubs do you have?

To see the list of clubs click here. You can also get involved in other activities such as band, orchestra, chorus, choreo, dance, yearbook, journalism, and the website by taking them as elective classes. Clubs and organizations provide a good way to make friends with people with a common interest.

How can I make my own club?

You can go talk to Ms. Kaya or Ms. Hawkinsat the Activities Office located in S14 during the beginning of the year.

Are the lockers assigned?

No, lockers are chosen at orientation.

Do you need to bring a lock?

Yes, otherwise you won't have a locker. It is good to bring two locks one for your gym locker and one for your regular locker.

What do I do if I'm having a crisis?

Talk to Safe School's Phil McDonald (310) 377-4888 Ext. 272. Talk to your counselor. Call Community Helpline 541-2525.

How can I use a computer on campus?

You can use the computers in the library and the computers in the Tech Lab which is located in the library.

How do I get to see my counselor?

You go to the counseling office and fill out a "Request to See Counselor" slip. You then put the slip in your counselor's mailbox. Your counselor will call you out of class to talk to you. If you are having an emergency, the Safe Schools counselor Phil McDonald is available in the Counseling Office on a walk in basis. Your counselor is also available at any time your emergency is critical.

When and how do we get our report cards?

Quarter report cards are distributed in class in November and April. These report cards do not count on your GPA. Semester report cards are mailed home and do count.

What do I do if someone hassles me?

Chances are no one is going to bother you, but if they do, this is what you should do. See your counselor or Safe-Schools counselor about this. See Ms. Darling in the Hawthorne office. You can also report to security guards.
