What courses should I take Sophomore year?

You have a number of choices, depending on what you took in Freshman year. A typical Sophomore takes Algebra 2, Chemistry 1, English 2, World History, and/or another elective. If you have not taken health/drivers education, you may want to take it this year. Keep in mind, your courses you take this year depend on what you took last year, and also influence what you take next year. You may want to begin to take AP courses.

What are AP courses anyway?

AP, or Advanced Placement, courses are vigorous, high paced classes that prepare you for the AP exam in the Spring. The main advantage of taking an AP course is to prepare for college level classes and receive both high school and college credit for its completence. AP exams are given to students taking the course. Some colleges then grant credit or advanced curricular placement, or both, to students who performed well. Exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the highest. AP exams are approximately $80 each and are given in May. Qualifying AP scores offer up to one year's college credit and special consideration on the admission process. In other words, it helps with college.

What APs can I take this year?

There are only a few APs that Sophomores may take. They include Chemistry 2 AP, Biology 2 AP, and European History AP (EHAP). Exceptions may be made.

Should I do CSF?

Of course. You should sign up for CSF every semester of your highschool year because membership makes you eligible for a scholorships.

Do I sign up for National Honor Society this year?

No, National Honor Society is for juniors and seniors.

Can I leave at lunch?

No. Sophomores and Freshmen are never allowed to leave at Lunch, Period 5, or Period 6 unless they have work experience, SCROC, or an off campus pass.

Do I have to take PE?

Sophomores are required to participate in a physical education course. This could include an athletic team, a PE waiver, PE dance, dance teams, or regular PE. Two years of physical education are required to graduate high school.

Do I have to take the SATs and PSATs this year?

The real SAT and PSAT tests are generally taken junior year. However, it is recommended that Sophomores partake in practice PSATs and SATs, and may want to begin enrolling in helpful PSAT and SAT courses. If applicable, you may take the SAT II test in June.

What is the CAHSEE and why do I have to take it?

The California High School Exit Exam is a new test required for all 10th graders by the State. Offered on March 15 and 16, Sophomores are required to pass the exam in order to graduate from high school. All high school students are offered three chances to pass. A large packet with study guides and information should be sent out to all Sophomores around January. 10th graders should take advantage of these study guides.

What is the COPS test?

The COPS test is a short, easy survey taken during English and sent to your counselor. The COPs test will be reviewed with you during Sophomore counseling, and will help explore your interests.

Should I participate in clubs?

Most definetly. Clubs and organizations allow you to explore opportunities and find you interests. They sometimes also make you eligible for a number of scholarships and awards. It is a good way to get involved in school with your peers. As a sophomore, you are even eligible to start your own club.

Should I participate in ASB?

ASB is a very good way to get involved with the student body, and also promotes leadership. If you are creative, self-motivated, and a team player, you may want to participate in ASB.

Is it too early to start preparing for college?

It is never too early to start thinking about college. You should be keeping a list of your activities and awards updated and start considering the type of school you might want to attend.
