| There
are a number of musical groups and ensembles in the PVPHS Music Department.
These include the Marching Corps, Marching
Band, Colorguard, Jazz
Bands, Concert Band, Orchestras,
Drum Line, Spring Musical
Band, and Pep Band. |
||
| The
Marching Corps consists of the Marching Band and Colorguard. The Corps represents
the school at all home football game half-time shows and at various field
shows and parades on weekends during the fall semester.
During the fall semester, the Marching Corps will meet daily during fifth and sixth periods and also will practice from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. These afternoon practices are mandatory. Attendance is required at all scheduled football games, field tournaments and parades. Failure to attend required activities will affect the student musician's grade. If there is an emergency that conflicts with a performance, Mr. Steiner should be notified as soon as possible. The Marching season begins
with the end of summer band camp. This year, Band Camp will be held August
24-28 at Ridgecrest Intermediate School. Band Camp provides a marvelous
opportunity for Marching Corps members from all grades to get acquainted
and form a cohesive group. The Marching Corps returns from camp as a unified
organization ready to represent our school. |

| Marching
Band members receive their uniforms and hats from the school. All band members
should be fitted during the summer. If you have not been fitted, please
call the Marching Band Representative. For field shows and competitions,
band members wear uniforms, hats, white gloves, and black shoes as specified
by the Music Department. For all away football games, a PVPHS band sweatshirt
or T-shirt will be worn. For competitions the band T-shirt must be worn
under uniforms. Marching Band members are strongly encouraged to order the classic letterman jackets to be worn as away-game bleacher uniforms and around campus. After a $100 subsidy from Marching Band Booster, the leather-and-wool jacket costs approximately $250, depending on customized stitching and patches. See the Band Camp packet for more information, and ask your student leaders to model their own jackets. Each band member needs to furnish the following items: It is important that all band members look immaculate for all games and competitions. Uniform infractions cost points. Since the top five bands in most competitions are often within one point, one sloppy uniform can make the difference between first and last place. Section leaders will check each section member's appearance at every competition: Jackets: T-shirt must not show when instrument
is in playing position. Violations will result in losing points and possible removal from the competition. The listed rules must be followed exactly in order to maintain Marching Corps' highest quality appearance. Marching Band transportation fee: $157 (Payable to PVPUSD) |

| During
the fall semester, the Colorguard marches and twirls as part of the Marching
Corps at all home football games, field shows, and parades, adding its own
special brand of color and excitement. The focus of Colorguard is Tall Flags,
but the advisor may decide to add rifle or saber twirling, depending upon
the show's theme and the skills of the team members. During the spring semester,
selected Guard members compete in several indoor competitions as part of
the Winterguard Association of Southern California.
Colorguard involves not only mental and physical effort but financial resources as well, both from the team and from individual members. Music Boosters provides some financial support for show flags and field and parade uniforms, but members must purchase two flagpoles, competition boots, leggings, and tights. Members must also purchase football season uniforms and tennis shoes to wear to school and to games on Fridays during football season. Members generally make their own practice flags and may be called upon to participate in colorguard "sewing bees" to help defray the cost of costumes and props. In addition, Winterguard participants may be required to purchase relatively inexpensive costumes for spring competitions. Other items such as sweats, wool jackets, and duffel bags may be purchased but are optional. Colorguard has ambitious plans to attend national competitions. Consequently, Colorguard members and families will be involved in a myriad of fundraising activities, such as car washes, cookie sales, and community shows. Colorguard practices three afternoons a week for one to two hours during the weeks of summer school. During the fall, members practice on certain afternoons, some portion of which is practice with Marching Band. During spring semester the Winterguard team practices two times a week. Times and location are determined by the advisor. Additional practices may be called as needed. Most Saturdays will be occupied with either competition or a practice. Colorguard members are selected at tryouts that are held in May for the following fall semester. Winterguard team members are selected at tryouts in November. Transportation to all Colorguard events is provided by
the school district. |

There
are two levels of Jazz Band; Intermediate Jazz and Advanced Jazz. Membership
in either Jazz Band is by audition or teacher approval. Auditions are held
in the spring as noted in the Calendar link. Intermediate Jazz meets during
third period and Advanced Jazz during fourth period. There are no after
school practices. The music in this program tends to be difficult, and requires
significant commitment and practice at home.
Both Jazz Bands perform at fall and spring concerts at the High School, and at off-campus competitions and concerts during the year. Band members provide their own clothing and wear white shirts and black pants or skirts at concerts and competitions. Transportation is provided by the school district fora $60 fee. |

| Drum Line is an emsemble offering percussionists a unique opportunity to hone
their skills, perform and represent PVP High School in competitions sponsored
by the American Drum Line Association. Drum Line takes place during the
spring semester, and placement is by audition at the end of fall semester.
Practices are after school two or three times per week during the competition
season. The goal is to participate in as many as six competitions throughout
the Southern California area.
There is a membership fee for Drum Line to cover the costs of the production, costumes, music, and additional coaches. To help defray these costs, members are required to participate in fundraising efforts in the fall and spring semesters. The funds raised also are used to purchase new percussion instruments, and maintain and repair current instruments. Membership fee varies according to the number of students enrolled and the production needs for the shows. Fee schedule will be available late in the fall semester. Dates for Drum Line competitions are coordinated with other musical events and programs, and are available during the fall semester. Transportation is provided by the school through the transportation fee, but parents are expected to participate in chaperoning, equipment monitoring and set-up, and assisting the percussionists with backdrop creation and maintenance for the productions. Drum Line's instructor, Carlos Sanchez, creates the production theme, writes much of the music, does the musical arrangements, and assists with production design in addition to teaching percussion. Drum Line also employs coaches to enhance instruction in the different areas, specifically Battery (drums, cymbals) and Pit (mallet instruments such as marimba, xylophone and vibraphone). They include Mary Colleran, Pit coach and Jason Pearson, battery coach. The productions may be simple or highly elaborate, and competitions are quite creative and fun to watch. Drum Line performs at the school during the Concert Band spring concert at the PAC. More information about
Drum Lines, competition dates and competition standings are available
on the American Drum Line Association web site www.amdrumassn.org. Drum Line transportation fee: $60 (Payable to PVPUSD) For more information, Contact parent representative Cynthia Nast at cnast@aol.com,

| Each
spring semester the Music Department, in conjunction with the Drama Department,
stages a musical theater production. Past musicals have included Tommy,
Kiss Me Kate and The Wiz, among others. In January there
will be auditions for musicians who want to be part of the pit orchestra
for the musical. This is a great opportunity for students to perform music
in the same way it is performed by professional musicians on Broadway. Back to Top |
