MEDICAL AID TEAM – TRIAGE

The Medical Aid Team shall consist of the School Nurse and/or Health Aide and about 15% of the staff. All should have first aid training.

Post Location: Softball Field near the portables
Equipment Location: Medical Container on Softball Field

Equipment includes: 3 medical suitcases for drill purposes, 6 carts filled with medical supplies for “real disaster”, 2 canopies, cots, tarps, stretchers, blankets, water, paper cups, walkie-talkie, yellow emergency forms, clipboard, pen and paper, table, 4 chairs, and wheelchair.

PROCEDURES:
1. Set up First Aid station with the aid of student team members. Use tarps for ground. Lay out supplies for easy access and put up signs to prioritize injuries. One or more canopies should be set up to shelter injured as they arrive. The nurse or person in charge will delegate the assignments so that work will be coordinated.

2. Communicate by walkie-talkie to Command Center if more supplies are needed from the large container. Student runners can bring these.

3. Sort out Triage victims by injury. Help those you can with your level of medical training and supplies available. Report via walkie-talkie to the Command Center the major and moderate injuries; inform Command Center of individuals you are unable to handle so that request for professional medical help can be made, or psychological intervention can be provided.

4. LOG ALL INJURIES on first aid log and on triage tags. Update conditions periodically. Use adhesive tags to identify or leave information with injured.

5. Send for runners from Runners Pool as needed. (Use one runner to obtain five more.) Remember to allow them to rest.

MORGUE:
1. Will be under the supervision of Medical Team with one adult stationed once there is a death. Other adults will be sent to assist as needed.

2. The morgue should be located far enough away from the injured but close enough to be supervised by Medical Aide Coordinator. A canopy and tarp walls should shield the area. Use adults from the Command Center to set up the canopy and walls.

3. Identify victim with name, date and time of death, if known.

4. No one is allowed in the area unless authorized by the Coordinator. No unauthorized entry should be allowed. Provisions must be made to accompany any parent into this area.

5. No victim is to be removed from this area.
