The Value of Communication

Being raised in a military family afforded me the opportunity to live in many different places. My sister and I were born in Germany and upon returning to the United States, we moved every two to three years.  We adjusted quickly to new schools, new friends, and new communities on a regular basis. Due to the specifics of my dad’s orders, we seldom had the opportunity to travel over the holidays to visit extended family, so communication became an essential part of my upbringing. This was before the days of email, texts, and cell phones, and I relied on landlines and letter writing.  The ability to stay connected with my friends and family was essential as I adapted to my new surroundings each year.
