The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District has a long history of providing an excellent education to its students. While we are committed to continuing to provide the high-quality educational experience our community has come to expect, our district is facing significant facility challenges that we must address soon.
Despite exceptional maintenance efforts over the years, most of our schools have serious facility and infrastructure challenges that are threatening the safety of our students and staff. Key issues include seismic risks, sewer problems, gas leaks, and limited electrical capacity that requires replacement wiring.
For several years, PVPUSD has explored all possible solutions to address these needs. After an exhaustive review, it was determined that a general obligation bond is the only viable solution. The Board of Education and Superintendent continue to advocate for state funding for our facilities, including their most recent letter to Public Advocates, Inc. on April 2nd. On December 13, 2023, the PVPUSD Board of Education provided direction to explore the feasibility of a bond measure. The district has an existing contract with Isom Advisors, an educational financial advisor company that works with many districts in California. John Isom presented financial information to the board relevant to exploring the possibility of a bond (presentation and video clip found below). Isom Advisors also conducted a phone survey of our community, the results of which can also be found below.
At this time, PVPUSD has not officially decided whether to move forward with a bond measure. The board will be reviewing all information and gathering community input before making a final decision in the coming months.
In January 2024, Isom Advisors conducted a phone survey of 500 households in the PVPUSD community. The survey tested voter attitudes regarding the district, projects, and tax tolerances for a possible school facilities improvement bond program.
Key findings from the survey include:
